Background of the Study

Adolescent pregnancy presents unique challenges, as young mothers often lack the knowledge and resources to access appropriate maternal healthcare services. In Niger State, adolescent mothers face numerous obstacles, including socio-cultural barriers, limited educational opportunities, and a lack of awareness about the importance of antenatal care (Bello et al., 2024). Antenatal care is vital for the health of both the mother and the baby, particularly for adolescent mothers, who are more likely to face pregnancy complications and delivery-related risks. Assessing the knowledge and perceptions of adolescent mothers regarding antenatal care is crucial for developing targeted interventions to improve their health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem

In Niger State, adolescent mothers often lack comprehensive knowledge about the importance of antenatal care, which affects their ability to make informed decisions regarding their health during pregnancy. This lack of awareness contributes to inadequate ANC uptake, leading to increased risks of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Identifying the gaps in knowledge and understanding among adolescent mothers in Niger State is essential for developing effective strategies to improve ANC participation and maternal health outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of knowledge about antenatal care among adolescent mothers in Niger State.

2. To evaluate the perceptions of adolescent mothers about the benefits and importance of antenatal care.

3. To identify factors that influence the antenatal care-seeking behavior of adolescent mothers in Niger State.

Research Questions

1. What is the level of knowledge about antenatal care among adolescent mothers in Niger State?

2. What are the perceptions of adolescent mothers regarding the importance of antenatal care in Niger State?

3. What factors influence the antenatal care-seeking behavior of adolescent mothers in Niger State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Adolescent mothers in Niger State have limited knowledge of antenatal care.

2. Negative perceptions about antenatal care are associated with lower utilization of antenatal services among adolescent mothers in Niger State.

3. Socio-cultural and economic factors influence the antenatal care-seeking behavior of adolescent mothers in Niger State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adolescent mothers in urban and rural areas of Niger State. Limitations may include the variability in educational levels among adolescent mothers and cultural sensitivities related to pregnancy and childbirth among adolescents.

Definitions of Terms
